The figures born on this date represent two distinct chapters in American criminal history, separated by nearly eight decades but connected by acts of extreme violence. Lester Gillis — known to the public as Baby Face Nelson — emerged from Chicago's underworld to become one of the most lethal bank robbers of the Depression era, ultimately holding the grim distinction of killing more FBI agents than any other individual. Steven Green, born generations later, was one of four U.S. soldiers responsible for the 2006 Mahmudiyah killings in Iraq, a series of war crimes involving the rape and murder of a fourteen-year-old Iraqi girl and the killing of her family. Both cases drew sustained public attention not only for their brutality, but for what they revealed about institutional failure and the conditions that enable violence.
